Publicity for Nonfiction Authors

A guide for authors, by an author

Introduction

I created this webinar to help other nonfiction authors support their book launches. The 45-minute presentation was recorded during a live streaming event (the Q&A that followed was edited out). It is intended to be introductory rather than exhaustive.

Drawing on my experience as book critic, an editor, author, and publicist, I created this webinar specifically for traditionally published nonfiction authors (though many of the principles can be applied to fiction or self-published authors) to assist them in developing their own strategy, creating a media list, pitching events, bylines, and stories featuring themselves as sources, and supporting their in-house publicist on their book's journey.

My first nonfiction book, Red Sauce: How Italian Food Became American was published in 2022 by Rowman & Littlefield (now Bloomsbury). Since the book's publication, I've been interviewed and quoted in print and online, in magazines, newspapers, television, radio, and podcasts.

Having worked in strategic communications for 25 years, when my book was published, I knew what I had to do. Most authors don't.

Quick Guide

I created this Publicity Quick Guide (PDF) as a supplement to this webinar. You can use it to follow along with the above video, or save it for reference later.

Want More?

Independent book publicists are expensive. That doesn't mean you don't need a publicity campaign. If you wrote your own book, you can probably run your run you own publicity. If you need some help, that's where I come in.

I offer nonfiction author publicity coaching, a combination of strategy and accountability to guide you through the process of producing a publicity campaign to support your book. I supply the knowledge and expertise, and you follow through with pitching, writing, and speaking.

I offer single sessions for strategy development, or customized programs designed to guide you through the process from start to finish.

I also build personal websites for authors and professionals, and provide personal branding and thought leadership support, turning experts into the expert in their field.
